I have been to Pete’s Lake quite a few times over the past 14 years, and each occasion is a completely novel experience. From being shrouded in fog to a clarity that pierces the eye, Pete’s is always a treat; and this year was certainly no exception. We were treated to perfectly still water and a sun that rose among cirrus and low stratus streamers reflecting perfectly on a surface that oozed a soft mist as the light grew stronger. There seemed to be so many possible expressions of the event, but the mirror image of the sky reflected in the lake was the one that really appealed to me. A focal length of 36mm, just barely beyond wide-angle, gave me the angle of view and the balance I wanted. An aperture of f/16 provided depth-of-field, and a shutter speed of 1/10th second at ISO 100 gave me an overall slightly darker-than-medium exposure. A sunrise at Morning Pete’s is a wonderful way to start an UP day
It was a great morning among a week long series of great mornings!
Sharing this experience with you, Bonnie and classmates is one I shall always cherish. The photography opportunities were stunning, the class interaction was almost holy.
Excellent shot. This was a week I will always remember with all of the fabulous places we were at and all of the classmates were amazing.
I am delighted for you and Bonnie that your week at the UP turned out so well. Wish I could have been there with you, but practical realities forced me to choose between it and Rhode Island. I love your choice of focal length in this image, as the varied and reflected clouds make it spectacular.
In a seminar I am teaching this coming weekend I talk about how water entices us, engages us, enriches us, and enchants us. I find this beautiful scene enchanting and my life is enriched by the beauty of another sunrise over Pete’s lake. Although I have never visited this lake it so reminds me of Thornton and other lakes in the UP that exude solitude and the glory of creation. I might have preferred this image not as dark but that is why we are artists. We each have a different vision to share and you share yours beautifully.
I love the sky’s reflection in the still waters of the lake. In fact it is quite difficult to tell which way is up!
Gorgeous image! Sure wish I could have joined you.
Thank you again looking forward to joining you
Heavenly! What more can I say?
You seem to have a knack for finding beautiful skies. This one is a meeting of heaven and earth. I like the contrast between the wispy white clouds against the dark lower clouds and how they are perpendicular then it is all repeated in the water. I also like how your camera placement created all the diagonal lines from both directions. Thanks for sharing.
Good morning Everyone. I truly appreciate each of you for joining me for this Image, and I promise you that I will answer each of your comments individually this evening when Bonnie and I are somewhere between Cape Cod and Asheville. I look forward to sharing with you then. Meanwhile, Walk in Beauty.
Good morning Everyone. By the time Bonnie and I reached Enola, Pennsylvania last night, it was almost midnight, but we’re a day away from Asheville, so it was worth the effort. Thank you, again, for joining me for this conversation. On the morning this Image was created Pete’s Lake was nearly at its best; perhaps a bit more mist on the surface would have added to the scene, but the light was exquisite and the wind was dead-calm.
Hi Tom, thanks for your comment. I could not agree more. It was a great morning in a week of great mornings and I’m very glad you were there to share them with us. I hope you have a beautiful West Virginia autumn.
Hi Judy. It’s great to hear from you, and I love your choice of words: “stunning” and “holy.” This last UP workshop is one I will forever treasure for exactly the reasons you have shared. I am truly grateful you were there to share each of those days with Bonnie and me and everyone else. Having you with us was a special treat, and you are right: it was a wonderful community of diverse, but shared adventurers.
Hey David. Thanks for your kind words and for being a part of this adventure and this group of people. Everyone really enjoyed you and Pat, and all of your energy and spirit. I hope it will always be well with you wherever you travel. I sincerely hope our paths will cross again.
Donald, it’s great to hear from you and to read your kind and thoughtful words. Rhode Island was every bit as special as the UP, and I wish only that you could have shared both of them, but having you join us for one was special enough. I hope your return to the rigors of academia was seamless and without difficulty. It would be great to have you with us again somewhere down the road. Perhaps one day we’ll share a UP adventure.
Hey Dorsey. Your words, as always, are appreciated for their clarity and generosity and for their thoughtful candor. I hope you do visit Pete’s one day, and I would love to be there with you to appreciate how you would connect with it as you have with all of the other wonderful places in the UP. This image somehow appears darker on the monitor than it does/did in my files, but you are so right: I tend to appreciate somewhat darker renditions of a scene in contrast, say, to our dear friend, Chuck Summers, whose work is typically so light and almost ethereal. It would be interesting to have a conversation around this topic sometime. I hope you have a wonderful fall season wherever you may wander.
Hi Donald; thank you for joining us and for your thoughtful observations, which i have come to really appreciate. If you knew me better, you would understand that it is not uncommon for me to be challenged to know “which way is up,” but hopefully that’s part of the adventure too.
Hey Ron. I always appreciate your kind and thoughtful words, and i do, indeed, wish you could have shared the beauty of the Upper Peninsula with us.
Hi Dana. Thank you for joining us and for being part of this conversation. I look forward to the time you will be able to join us for an adventure. Until then, walk in beauty.
Hey Warren. Your kind and thoughtful words are always appreciated. Bonnie and I look forward to seeing you very soon.in that heavenly place called “Utah.”
Hi Nancy T., we also look forward to seeing you soon, as well. Once again your descriptions have clarified for us the relationships and elements of your experience; and once again we are enriched by your thoughtfulness. When I saw what was unfolding for us at Pete’s on this morning, I knew that a perfect mirror image was somewhere ahead and I was awed when this one revealed itself. Thank you for describing it so well.
And thanks, again, to Everyone for being part of this discussion – to those who shared it with us in Michigan and those who have shared it with us now.
