Last week I went to the Smokies looking for images, but having no real idea about what type of image I was seeking or where I might find it. The entire adventure began in serendipity, but I eventually realized that what I kept seeing in my mind’s eye were the beautiful intimate landscapes of which Eliot Porter is the acknowledged master; so as I traveled, I tried to open my eyes to the small slices of Beauty which tell the story of the whole. There were places in the Park where the peaking foliage told the story I was imagining with clarity and joy. What a fun day I had.
A focal length of 105mm, the essence of short-telephotoland, gave me the somewhat narrowed angle-of-view I wanted, with only a little compression and magnification. An aperture of f/20 provided depth-of-field; and a shutter speed of 0.8 second at ISO 100 gave me an overall medium exposure.
I am so very grateful that the Smokies are my home and that the public lands they encompass have been preserved as a heritage for all of us. May we always appreciate and work to preserve that heritage.
Sometimes a small slice is betyer than the whole pie. Thanks for a wonderful look at what Nature can produce.
Hey Chuck. It’s great to have you join me. You are absolutely correct and it’s especially true when the small slice completely tells the story of the whole pie. Nature never fails to amaze and inspire
I hear the sound Eliot Porter applauding and cheering: “Bravo, Don; I could not have captured this image better.”
Love & Hugs,
Pat
Ah, Dear One, it is so good to hear from you. I am honored that your ears would hear Porter’s words offering any such reaction to my work. It would have indeed been a great treat to have discussed with him the idea of the intimate landscape as a separate and complete genre of the photographic image. I hope that the coming year will see our paths cross. Hope you and Sue are both well.
