John Atlantic Burr was born in 1846 while his parents, Charles and Sarah, were aboard the SS Brooklyn somewhere in the Atlantic on their way to San Francisco, thence to Salt Lake City to follow their faith as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints By 1876, the Burr family had relocated south and had founded the town of Burrville near the geographic center of the State of Utah.

John Atlantic grew up to become a cattleman whose herds wintered near what is now the community of Bullfrog on Lake Powell and summered near Burr’s home in Burrville. Moving the herd from one to the other location required a 68-mile trek across some of the most rugged back country in the area of what is now central Utah, including a ten-mile stretch through Long Canyon and some of the most magnificent scenery to be found anywhere. In November snow is likely.

A focal length of 84mm, short telephotoland, gave me the angle-of-view I wanted, with just a bit of magnification and compression. An aperture of f/22 provided depth-of-field; and a shutter speed of 1/8th second at ISO 100 gave me an overall medium exposure.

Long Canyon is BLM land as part of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. GS-ENM is still awaiting restoration to its pre-2017 boundaries. Your interest and support could hasten this outcome. Let your thoughts be known.
